Sifnos from Australia, honestly — the long way to the Greece worth flying for

    Γράφει η Elena Philippou,Ενημερώθηκε Ιούνιος 2026

    8 λεπτά ανάγνωση

You've seen the photos: the blue-shuttered villages, the seafood eaten by the water, the island everyone's quietly calling the real alternative. From Australia, the question isn't whether Sifnos is beautiful. It's whether it's worth flying the better part of a day, and catching a ferry, to get there. We think it is — and this is how to do it so it feels unforgettable rather than exhausting.

We're Villa Olivia Clara, in Platis Gialos, and Elena hosts here. We've welcomed Australians from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane for birthdays, anniversaries and the kind of family gathering you cross the world for. This is the honest, practical guide we wish they'd had open before they booked.

    Platis Gialos beach, Sifnos

    Is it actually worth it?

Short answer: yes — if you give it time and treat the journey as part of slowing down. Sifnos is the island for the traveller who has already done Santorini and Mykonos and wants the Greece underneath the postcards: long lunches, monastery paths, a pottery tradition that still feeds the kitchens, and evenings where nothing is trying to sell you anything. You're not the only one to notice: National Geographic calls it Greece's gourmet island, Vogue named it the number-one place to travel in 2024, and Australia's own Broadsheet put it among their must-visit destinations for 2026. It's not a place you fly across the world to skim, though — come for a flying visit, and the journey home will feel longer than the holiday.

    The journey, really

There's no airport on Sifnos, and no direct flight from Australia to Greece, so every trip is two legs. From Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane you'll reach Athens with at least one stop — around 24 hours of total travel. Then Athens to Sifnos is a ferry from the port of Piraeus (the metro's line 3 runs there from the airport in about 55 to 60 minutes): about 2½ hours on the high-speed boat, or 5 to 6 hours on the slower conventional ferry, arriving at Kamares, the island's port, about 15 to 20 minutes by car from Platis Gialos. Our advice, after watching a lot of jet-lagged arrivals: spend a night in Athens to reset, then take a morning ferry with the island ahead of you, not a midnight scramble.

    Give the island real time

When you've come this far, give the island room. We'd suggest a week or more on Sifnos as the heart of a two- to three-week Greece trip — long enough to stop counting days and start living one. It's also why a villa beats a string of hotels for a group: one base, one set of keys, your own kitchen and pool, no repacking. Settle in once and let Sifnos come to you.

When to come — around your calendar

The Greek island season runs roughly May to October — the mirror image of the Australian one. Two windows work best from home: the mid-year school holidays in late June and July, which land in peak Greek summer; and September into early October, when the sea is still warm from a long summer, the island exhales, and prices ease. If you can choose, we love September — warm water, soft light, and the island back to itself.

Best time to visit Sifnos, season by season

Make it a trip, not a stop

Sifnos sits in the western Cyclades, so it pairs naturally with a second or third island without long backtracking — Milos, Serifos, Kimolos and Folegandros are all short ferry hops. The trick over two or three weeks is to sequence them so you're always moving forward, never doubling back to Piraeus between each one. We've mapped the routes that flow.

    If it's a celebration

Most of our Australian guests come for an occasion — a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a family finally in one place. Planned from the other side of the world, the logistics are the hard part: lead times, a group flying in from three different cities, everyone landing on different days. The villa sleeps eight, exclusive-use, so the whole party is under one roof for the occasion (it's a home for a celebration, not an events venue). Elena helps line up the arrivals and the things the guides don't mention — just ask.

    How we'd do it

If you were our guests, here's the shape we'd suggest: a night in Athens to land and reset, a morning ferry to Sifnos, a week or more here in Platis Gialos as your base, then one island added on the way back if you've the time. Book direct and you're talking to Elena, not a call centre — she can answer the real questions, help with ferry timing, and hold your dates for two or three days while you sort the flights. That's the whole idea: the person who'll be here when you arrive is the person you plan with.

    Τι λένε οι Αυστραλοί επισκέπτες

“Elena has maintained a beautiful property on Sifnos. It was perfect for our family vacation and has the best equipped kitchen we’ve seen which we very much enjoyed for cooking some family dinners. Elena is a lovely person who was extremely helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back here when next in Sifnos.”

“Amazing place to stay! We stayed for 6 nights. Perfect for 2 families. Walkable to everything including beaches, cafes, and tavernas. The kitchen was well equipped. Lots of space for kids to run around.”

    Common questions, answered

How long is the flight from Australia to Sifnos?

There are no direct flights from Australia to Greece. From Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane you'll fly to Athens with one stop — typically 23 to 27 hours of total travel, with one stop — then reach Sifnos by ferry from Piraeus, as there's no airport on the island. Most Australians stay a night in Athens to reset and take a morning ferry.

Is Sifnos worth visiting from Australia?

If you want the quiet, authentic side of Greece rather than the crowds of Santorini and Mykonos, yes. Sifnos is known for its food, its walking trails between old monasteries, its pottery and its calm. It rewards a longer, slower stay — at least a week on the island as the heart of a two- to three-week Greece trip, not a quick stopover.

When is the best time to visit Greece from Australia?

The Greek island season runs roughly May to October — the opposite of the Australian calendar. The two windows that suit Australians best are the mid-year school holidays (late June and July, in peak Greek summer) and September into early October, when the sea is still warm, the island is quieter and prices ease. We're partial to September.

How many days should I spend in Greece coming from Australia?

When you've travelled this far, two to three weeks makes the journey worth it. A common shape: a night or two in Athens, a week or more based on one island like Sifnos, and one or two other islands added without backtracking. Flying to the far side of the world for a long weekend rarely feels worth it once you've recovered from the trip.

How do you get to Sifnos from Athens?

By ferry from the port of Piraeus — about 2½ hours on the high-speed boat, or 5 to 6 hours on the slower conventional ferry, arriving at Kamares, the island's port (about 15 to 20 minutes by car from Platis Gialos). There's no airport on Sifnos. Ferries run daily in summer; booking ahead for July and August is wise.

Which islands pair well with Sifnos for a longer trip?

Sifnos sits in the western Cyclades, so Milos, Serifos, Kimolos and Folegandros are all easy, short ferry hops — ideal for a two- or three-week trip without long backtracking. Paros and Santorini are reachable too. Our island-pairing guide walks through the routes that don't double back.

Planning it from the other side of the world?

Villa Olivia Clara sleeps eight in Platis Gialos — room for the whole family or friend group who've flown in for the occasion. Check the dates, and talk to Elena directly about the ferry timing and everything around it.
