The medieval former capital, built on a cliff above the sea.
Kastro is the oldest and most atmospheric village on Sifnos — the island's capital for centuries, set on a rocky headland on the east coast. Its houses are built into one another to form a defensive ring, with Venetian-era coats of arms still set above some doorways and the Aegean falling away on three sides. It's a place to wander slowly rather than tick off sights.

Kastro was settled in antiquity and served as the capital of Sifnos through the medieval and Venetian periods. The outer houses form a near-continuous wall, their backs to the sea, with narrow covered passages threading between them. Marble fragments and old crests are built into the lanes — the village is, in effect, a living archaeological site you can walk through.
A loop around the outer edge takes maybe twenty minutes and gives you the village's best views — whitewashed houses above sheer rock, and the small church of the Eptamartyres (Seven Martyrs) sitting alone on a rock just offshore, one of the most photographed spots on Sifnos. There's a small archaeological museum in the village too.

A steep path and a short road lead down from Kastro to Seralia, the village's little harbour beach — a sheltered cove with tavernas right on the water. It's a good place to swim and eat after exploring the lanes above.
Kastro is on the far side of the island from Platis Gialos — roughly 15–20 minutes by car. It makes an easy half-day from the villa, best in the late afternoon when the light is soft and the day-trippers have thinned. Pair it with dinner in nearby Apollonia on the way back.

Yes — it's the island's most atmospheric village, with the best sea views, the iconic Eptamartyres chapel on its rock, and a small archaeological museum. Late afternoon is the nicest time to walk it.

Villa Olivia Clara, above Platis Gialos, is an easy drive from Kastro and the rest of the island. Tell Elena your dates and she'll help you plan the days, villages and beaches.
