Where to hire, what to know, and how we can sort it for you.
Sifnos is small (about half an hour end to end) but hilly, with the villages, quieter beaches and trailheads spread out. A car isn't essential for a beach stay in Platis Gialos, but it makes exploring the rest of the island far easier. This is the practical guide we send guests when they ask.
For buses, taxis and the bigger picture, see our guide to getting around Sifnos.
This is the single most important tip. In peak summer, roughly mid-July through August, cars sell out across the island, and the better rates and the automatic cars go first. Reserve a few weeks ahead for those dates. In the shoulder months (May–June, September–October) it's more relaxed, but it's still worth booking a few days before you arrive so a car is ready at the port.
As across the Greek islands, most rental cars on Sifnos have manual transmission. Automatics are available but limited, and they're the first to go in July and August — so if you can only drive an automatic, book early and confirm it explicitly with the agency. Among the local agencies, Sifnos Drive lists automatic cars; for the others, ask before you book, or let us check with them for you.
Most agencies are at Kamares, the ferry port (the most convenient place to pick up a car on arrival), and a few are up in Apollonia, the capital. Many will deliver the car to the port for your ferry, or to your accommodation, and collect it again at the end. From Kamares it's about 15–20 minutes to Platis Gialos and the villa.
A few established agencies, all with pickup at or near Kamares port. Rates vary by season and car type — lowest in spring and autumn, highest in July and August.
Other agencies also operate at the port and in Apollonia. If you'd rather not choose, just tell us your dates and we'll arrange one.
Licence: bring your driving licence. EU/EEA licences are accepted, as are English-language licences from the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. Some other non-EU licences need an International Driving Permit alongside the national one — check for your country, or ask us.
Age: most agencies rent to drivers over 21–23, sometimes with a young-driver surcharge; the car is usually in the main driver's name.
Roads: paved and well signed, but narrow and winding in places, and some beach-access tracks are rough — take it slowly.
Parking: easy most of the year, but it fills up around Platis Gialos and Apollonia in August — arrive early or use the bus on the busiest days.
Fuel: the petrol stations are mainly around Apollonia. Many rentals are full-to-full, so fill up before you return the car — and before driving to remote spots like Cheronissos or Vroulidia.
If you'd rather skip the admin, tell Elena your dates and what you need (automatic or manual, any child seats) and she'll book a car with a trusted local agency and have it waiting at the port when your ferry comes in. One less thing to organise before you travel.
Not for a beach-based stay in Platis Gialos, where the beach, tavernas and a bus stop are all walkable. A car helps if you want to explore the villages, the quieter beaches and the hiking trails — many guests rent one for just a few days of their stay.
Most are manual, as across the Greek islands. Automatics are available but limited, especially in July and August — book early and confirm an automatic explicitly. Sifnos Drive, for example, lists automatic cars.
EU/EEA driving licences are accepted. Visitors from outside the EU may need an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence — check the requirement for your country before you travel, or ask us and we'll confirm with the agency.
Yes — most Sifnos agencies deliver to Kamares port for your ferry, or to your accommodation, and collect it at the end. We can arrange this so a car is waiting when you arrive.
A few weeks ahead. In peak summer cars sell out and the automatics and better rates go first, so the earlier you book for July–August, the better.
Staying at Villa Olivia Clara? Tell Elena your dates and she'll arrange your car and transfer with a trusted local agency, ready at the port. Less admin, more holiday.
