Is Sifnos expensive?

Mykonos and Santorini charge roughly half again more than Sifnos for the same standard of room and the same dinner. That is the guide writers' figure. Nobody measures prices island by island, so treat it as a direction. Milos and Naxos cost a little less than Sifnos, and you notice it at dinner more than in the room rate. One 2026 comparison puts Sifnos restaurants fifteen to twenty per cent above Milos and blames the cooking, and that too is one writer's estimate.

Below is what things cost in 2026, with the source and the date beside each figure. Prices in the Cyclades move every season and most of what is written about them was true two years ago. Where we could not check a number we say so.

Is it expensive?

Not by Cycladic standards. Reckon on €68–92 per person per day in rooms and tavernas, €110–150 with a small hotel and a shared car, and €190–450 in a luxury hotel depending on the season, with the ferry on top.

Cheaper than

Mykonos and Santorini, by a wide margin. Something like half again more for the same standard of room and meal.

Dearer than

Milos and Naxos, by a little. Nearly all of the gap is dinner, and dinner is what people come to Sifnos for. Tselementes was born here, and the cooking took its name from him.

The line people forget

Fuel. The Cyclades averaged €2.26 a litre in August 2026, roughly 30 cents above Athens, and a hire car in July costs double its winter rate.

What a day costs

Per person, per day, once you are on the island, for bed, food and getting about. The ferry has its own section next.

The luxury row swings with the season. €115 a head is a luxury double in May or October and €340 is the top end of the same room in August. Milos works out a little cheaper than Sifnos at every tier, though the published day rates for both islands are all over the place, so do not lean on any one figure.

Getting here

Sifnos has no airport, so the ferry is the biggest line before you arrive. From Piraeus a conventional boat starts around €40.50 with Fast Ferries or €43 with Aegean Sea Lines and takes about five hours. The SeaJets high-speed is about €68.70 and does it in two and a half. So the fast boat costs roughly seventy per cent more and saves you about two and a half hours. If the forecast is calm, pay the difference.

The short hops are where the spread gets odd. Sifnos to Serifos is €6 on the Blue Star conventional boat and €24–28 on the SeaJets high-speed, for a crossing that differs by half an hour. To Milos it is €6.50 on the conventional boat, about two hours, and €35–40 on the fast one, which takes 40 to 50 minutes. The slow boats cost about a fifth as much, so if you are hopping between islands on a budget, take them.

Two things about 2026. Marine fuel nearly doubled between December and March, the operators raised fares twice (the second rise landed on 15 June) and the government put €56 million into holding prices down. Greek ferry tickets carry no separate fuel surcharge, it is all inside the fare. Budget €80–140 per person for the return crossing, depending on which boats you take. Where you sleep

This is the widest range of any line, and the one most guides get wrong, because they mix hotel rooms and whole houses into one average.

Peak sits about fifty per cent above the quiet months on the rooms and hotel lines. Luxury runs closer to double. September is the month we recommend if your dates are free. The sea is warmest in August, about 25 °C, and only a shade cooler in September, near 24, and by then the rates have started to fall.

A word on the villa row, since we are in it. Whole houses on Sifnos for six to twelve guests run about €900 to €2,900 a night. The €200–800 figures that circulate on aggregator sites are hotel rooms filed as villas. Our own rate is €1,400 to €2,200 depending on the week, and Villanovo lists another eight-guest Sifnos villa at exactly the same range (checked August 2026).

What eating out costs

A bakery breakfast is €4–10. A casual lunch is €15–25 a head. Dinner at a good taverna runs €25–40, and plenty of places come in well under that. Drakakis in Apollonia and Manganas in Artemonas are around €12–22 a person. Beer is €4–6, a coffee €2.50–4, house wine €6–8 a glass and a bottle €20–35.

Fish is sold by weight, and this is where bills surprise people. €60–90 a kilo, so a decent-sized fish for two lands at €25–45. Every Greek island prices fish this way. Ask the price before you point at the one you want.

At the top, Cantina at Seralia, the cove below Kastro, serves a tasting menu only, €70 a person in 2026, with a longer version for more. Three sittings, and you book ahead. It is the most expensive meal on the island by a distance. Prices move each season, so confirm when you book. The rest of what to eat here is in our Sifnos food guide.

Getting around

The bus is cheap. €2.20 for most journeys, €3.50 for the longer runs out of Kamares to Platis Gialos, Vathi, Kastro, Faros or Cheronissos. A week of bus travel costs less than one taxi ride would in most places. Every stop and the 2026 fares are on our bus timetable page.

A hire car is the bigger line, and the jump between seasons is steep. Only one firm on the island publishes its rates. Their small car goes from €35 a day in winter to €70 in July, August and most of September, a small SUV runs €65 to €110 across the same seasons, a scooter €18 to €35. Everyone else quotes on request. The fleet on the island is small and it does sell out, so book by May if you want a car in August. Then fuel, the line nobody budgets for. The Cyclades averaged €2.261 a litre for unleaded 95 in early August 2026, against under €2.00 in Athens. For a small car over a week, reckon on €40–60.

Boat trips, and what we could not find

We cannot give you a per-person price for a day cruise, because no Sifnos operator publishes one on its own site. Every company we checked quotes by phone or by message. A La Mer, the company in Platis Gialos we send guests to, lists its Poliegos trip from €900 for the whole boat. So write to them with your dates and how many you are.

What is published is self-drive hire from Platis Gialos. The small boats need no licence (check the engine size when you book, the exemption only covers the low-powered ones). About €190 for a half day and €270 for a full day on a 4.5-metre open boat, or €250 and €350 on a six-person boat, VAT included and fuel charged on top for the distance you cover. For comparison, a guided full-day boat trip on Milos runs about €100–120 a head. The trips we send our guests on are listed on our boat trips page.

Be careful with the booking platforms' figures. The large per-person prices you will see for Poliegos trips out of Sifnos are usually whole-boat charter totals. Most Sifnos operators sell the boat. The platform summaries then put a per-head label on the total. A four-hour private trip is €900 for four people, €30 for each extra person, up to seven on board. Shared day cruises are sold per head and cost far less, so check which of the two you are looking at.

The 2026 taxes

Every stay pays a climate resilience fee. It is charged per property per night, whoever is in it, and usually collected when you leave, though at Villa Olivia Clara it is already inside the price you are quoted. From April to October it is €15 a night for a villa or a house over 80 m², €8 for a smaller short-term rental, €5 for a three-star hotel and €2 for rooms. From November to March the villa rate drops to €4. Split across a full house of eight, the summer fee is under two euros each a night.

VAT is 13% on accommodation and restaurant food and 24% on most other things, and it is already inside any price you are quoted. One correction to something you may have read. Greece cut VAT by thirty per cent on a list of Aegean border islands, parts of the North Aegean and the Dodecanese, and Sifnos is not on it. We are in the Cyclades and pay the full mainland rates. At least one popular 2026 cost guide says otherwise.

The other 2026 charge is a cruise-passenger levy, €5 in peak season at ports other than Santorini and Mykonos. Kamares takes the occasional small ship, so on paper it applies here. You will arrive by ferry, so it will not touch you.

Cheaper or dearer than the neighbours?

Cheaper than Mykonos and Santorini by a wide margin. The gap is widest at the top of the market. A luxury room that costs €400 here runs to about double on Santorini in August.

Dearer than Milos and Naxos, by a little. The gap holds from simple rooms up to the top end. Nobody has measured the restaurant difference, so any percentage you see quoted is a guess, but dinner is where you feel it. Naxos is cheaper still for eating out. A simple taverna meal there is commonly €12–18.

Paros costs more. Naoussa, mostly, and everything that comes with it. Rooms of the same standard there tend to run €50 or more a night above Sifnos in high season. Broadly, Naxos, Milos, Sifnos and Paros sit in much the same band, with Mykonos and Santorini far above. We wrote the two islands up side by side in our Sifnos or Paros comparison.

A worked example

Eight adults, seven nights in August, in a villa, with two small cars, dinner out most nights at €25–40 a head (our planning figure for a taverna), one expensive dinner and one day on a boat.

That works out at €264–353 per person per day. Stay in rooms instead, skip the boat and take the bus, and the same island is €68–92 a day.

Does a villa work out cheaper? Only sometimes

We are a villa, so read this part with some suspicion. The arithmetic is there to check.

Eight people in this house in August is €200–275 each a night. Four rooms at a top-tier Sifnos hotel over the same nights, at the €400–680 a room in the table above, comes to roughly €1,600–2,700 a night in total. So against luxury hotel rooms, a villa split eight ways is the cheaper way to do it.
